Herschel Supply
Herschel is a tiny village in the middle of Canada's Saskatchewan.
A few dozen residents, grain silos, flatland stretching to the horizon.
In 1906, the Cormack brothers' great-grandparents arrived here from Scotland; three generations of the family grew up in this place, including their father, and for Lyndon and Jamie it remains one of the dearest spots on earth.
When they founded their own brand in Vancouver in 2009, they didn't look for a name in a marketing handbook.
They chose the one that meant home.
Both had years of industry experience behind them — Lyndon a decade at Vans, Jamie at K2 — and both were frustrated by the same thing: rucksacks were boring.
Either technical expedition packs or cheap school bags.
Nothing for someone who wants to carry a backpack with a coat.
The first pieces came together in garages, built on a simple recipe: silhouettes that look as though they've always existed, and details with patina.
Faux-leather straps, brass-toned hardware, striped lining.
Nostalgia can't be manufactured, but it can be honestly quoted.
The market responded immediately, and two brothers with a handful of samples became a company selling in dozens of countries.
Yet the firm still sits in Vancouver and is still run by the same two people who insist on it behaving like a family.
A young brand that looks a hundred years old, because its name genuinely carries a hundred years of family history.
Timelessness with an address: Herschel, Saskatchewan.
