Keen Outdoor
KEEN was born in 2003 with a shoe that split the world into two camps: the Newport sandal with a closed rubber toe cap, a hybrid between sandal and shoe that protected toes on the boat, on the water and on the trail.
One idea grew into a Portland brand that kept its habit of doing things its own way.
The strongest chapter is chemistry: KEEN decided to remove PFAS — the so-called forever chemicals used for waterproofing — from its shoes, and when it succeeded after years of development, it did something rarely seen in business.
It published its processes and findings and actively offered them to the competition, because a PFAS-free shoe from just one brand won’t solve the industry’s problem.
Add family ownership, in-house manufacturing of part of its footwear line and long-term community programmes.
KEEN is a brand that looks like an easy-going outdoor neighbour but in fundamental matters behaves more radically than most of the market.
Shoes for people who don’t mind that the toe cap looks odd, because they know why it’s there.
