Ölend is a Barcelona brand of rucksacks and bags that has smuggled Mediterranean softness into the outdoor category. The shapes are round and friendly, the colours look like the palette of a Catalan summer, and yet these are honestly functional pieces: water-resistant materials, well-thought-out pockets, volumes for the daily city and the weekend escape. They are sewn in small runs on the Iberian Peninsula, close to home, which gives the brand the most valuable thing small-scale production can offer: oversight. The short distance between design and sewing machine means fast iterations, quality control and fair conditions within sight, not on trust across three continents. Ölend grew out of Barcelona’s creative scene and it shows: the rucksacks don’t look like expedition gear but like the companion of someone walking from the studio to the beach, stopping for vegetables on the way. And yet they would handle an expedition just fine. Southern Europe has its own answer to Nordic minimalism: same function, more sun.
